Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) Quarterly Meeting Recap - September 2024

The Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) held its first quarterly meeting September 4–6, 2024, at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). On the first day, the delegation welcomed the new delegates and the group participated in an icebreaker, location updates, and a community agreements exercise.

On Day 2, delegates heard from Jessica Bulleri, UCSC director for student health outreach and promotion, and Meg Kobe, UCSC wellness program manager, who shared their experience implementing the Okanagan Charter at UC Santa Cruz. UC Davis is one of five UC campuses who have not yet adopted the health-promoting charter. Next, Ed Reiskin, UCSC vice chancellor of finance, operations and administration, discussed the impacts of the state budget on staff and then Shelby Young, UCSC compensation, classification and policy director, shared an overview of the three-year non-represented staff equity program that UCSC recently completed.

The delegation also received greetings on Days 2 and 3 from:

  • Tim Galarneau, UCSC education and research program specialist — an overview and tour of the UCSC Farm.
  • Cindy Larive, UCSC chancellor — topics relating to staff.

The delegation discussed guidelines for CUCSA public comment, specifically at Board of Regents meetings. Delegates then split into this year’s work groups focusing on:

  • Staff Wellbeing
  • Sustainable Workforce
  • Staff Engagement
  • Compensation

This work group time included the opportunity for workgroups to dialogue with Rosa Garcia, UCOP complaint resolution officer, and Rebekah Fernandez, UCOP director of executive compensation.

Summer quarter themes of note included staff well-being, identifying internal CUCSA process improvements through technology, and clarifying CUCSA’s Principles of Community. The Fall Quarterly Meeting will be held December 4–6 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
