2023 Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) Quarterly Meeting Recap

The Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) held its quarterly meeting December 6-8, 2023, hosted by University of California Office of the President (UCOP) at the UC Path Center in Riverside.

Day One

On the first day, the Delegation received Business Updates, Delegates provided location updates, and all participated in a Community Agreements team building activity, facilitated by Callale Concon, Ombudperson, President’s Executive Office, UCOP.

Day Two

On Day 2, Delegates heard from Calvin Turner, Executive Director of UCPath, who shared the vision of where UCPath has come from and where they are going regarding improving customer service and processes for all locations. Angelina Gomez, Director of Employee Services at UCPath, presented information about how the customer service team is improving the process of handling cases. Finally, Delegates enjoyed a walking tour of the UC Path Center.

 

Presentations

The Delegation also received presentations on Day 2 and 3 from:

  • Jo Mackness and Andenet Emiru, Staff Advisor to the Regents (STAR) and STAR Designate, respectively, who provided their current advocacy priorities and heard the Delegation’s observations on UC as an employer of choice.
  • Van Williams, Vice President of Information Technology Services and Chief Information Officer for the University of California, who discussed UC strategies for addressing social, cultural, and technological impediments to digital transformation.
  • Clare Sheridan, Regents Analyst, Office of the Secretary of the Regents, who shared an overarching perspective on the Regents and provided observations and suggestions on how CUCSA can best advocate for policy-covered staff.
  • Walking tour of UCR Arts, including exhibitions:

Workgroup Updates

The 2023-2024 CUCSA Work Groups also provided brief updates and took feedback during their Workgroup Presentations:

  • The Wellness work group is advocating for each UC location to have 1 wellness manager, identifying ways for CUCSA to help UC locations track their progress to adopt the Okanagan Charter, and will meet with system-wide Wellness Managers.
  • The Sustainable Workforce work group is compiling data regarding staffing numbers and best practices, defining burnout, and defining work-life balance.
  • The Policy-covered Staff Identity work group is reviewing PPSM 1 and reviewing each campus website for clear definition of policy-covered staff.
  • The Compensation work group is gathering compensation data and meeting with CFOs at various UC campuses.
