Davis Shakespeare Festival2018 Davis Shakespeare Festival

featuring
Mary Stuart & On the Twentieth Century
Davis Shakespeare Festival returns June 21st, presenting two great productions in repertory
for its 9th summer season:

MARY STUART runs June 21 - August 4. Queen Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots both
hold a claim to the throne. Elizabeth has protected her reign by keeping Mary imprisoned, but
after nineteen years, the queens go head to head in a fierce and dramatic showdown. This
powerful play explores how these strong women must hold fast to their own voices in the midst
of the infringing forces of politics, religion, and men. Peter Oswald’s translation premiered in
2005 in London’s West End and opened on Broadway in 2009, where it earned seven Tony
Award nominations including Best Revival of a Play. The cast features Sacramento stalwart
Jamie Jones* as Queen Elizabeth I, Bay Area favorite Sharon Rietkerk* as Mary Stuart, Ian
Hopps as Mortimer, as well as Thomas Dean, Hans Eleveld, Gina Harrower, Gregg Koski,
Martin Lehman, Will Oberholtzer, Sean O’Brien, and Kyle Stoner.

ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY runs June 22 - August 5. All aboard the Twentieth Century, a
luxury train traveling from Chicago to New York during the 1930’s! Oscar Jaffe, an
egomaniacal, bankrupt theater producer, has boarded the train with one goal: to convince Lily
Garland, a Hollywood celebrity and former flame, to star in his next not-yet-written production.
And he only has 16 hours! Will Lily sign the contract in time? On the Twentieth Century, with
brilliant music by Cy Coleman and hilarious book and lyrics by Comden & Green, ran on
Broadway from 1978 to 1979, winning five Tony Awards. Davis Shakespeare Festival is thrilled
to continue its tradition of shining a light on another not commonly produced, yet brilliant
musical! The cast features Bay Area’s Sharon Rietkerk* as Lily Garland, Christopher Ryan*
as Oscar Jaffee, Robin Fisher as Letitia Primrose, as well as Tim Gaffaney, Ian Hopps, Nicole
James, Charlie Lavaroni, Martin Lehman, Andrea J. Love, Sean O’Brien, Kyle Stoner, and Sarah
Williams.
