Staff at TGFS

Thank Goodness for Staff is a springtime celebration organized by UC Davis Staff Assembly in honor of all UC Davis staff members. This is our 35th year celebrating the hard work and contributions of UC Davis staff and we invite you to join in the fun.

This year's festivities will include contests like the Guess the Weight photo contest and the TGFS 2016 Logo contest. In addition to a delicious lunch, staff will be treated to prize drawings, freebies and other services at the various on and off-campus booths in our vendor showcase.We'll also have popcorn machines, roving magicians, caricaturists, quirky photos opps in the photo booths, and more.

Best of all, it’s all free. Isn’t it great to be UC Davis staff!

In early June, staff will also be celebrated and honored at the Citations for Excellence and Staff & Staff Dependent Scholarship award ceremony held at the Alumni Center.

A couple things to note about the TGFS event:

  • Tickets are for meals only. Staff are welcome to attend the event without a meal ticket.
  • TGFS is for staff only and not intended for the families and friends of staff.
  • Animals are not allowed at TGFS, except in the case of service animals.   

What to bring to TGFS:

  • A great attitude
  • Your meal ticket
  • Sunblock – because we’ve ordered up sunshine
  • A folding chair, blankets, or something comfortable to relax on
  • Beach umbrella  to share shade (ensure you have the equipment to properly stake/anchor your shade)
  • Reusable mug for refreshments
  • Reusable bag for vendor giveaways

Transportation and Parking

Please choose the lowest impact option available to you when traveling to Russell Field on May 7. We anticipate a wonderful turnout for TGFS and encourage you to consider these helpful transportation tips:

  • If you can walk, please do so! This is the best option for limiting our carbon impact as well as our impact on available parking.
  • If you can't walk, then ride your bike! TAPS will be on site offering safe, complimentary valet bicycle parking.
  • If you can't walk or bike, hop on one of the free shuttles.
  • If you must drive, please carpool.

Volunteer Information

Staff Volunteers
Staff are encouraged to come out and relax, and enjoy the activities available. However, we greatly appreciate the support of all the staff who signed up to help volunteer at the event. There are still a couple shifts left if you'd like to help the TGFS planning committee on the field. All volunteers will receive a free hat to wear on the day of the event to identify them as a volunteer. Additionally, all volunteers will be invited to a thank-you party, which will take place after the dust has settled from TGFS.

In keeping with tradition, administrators will be serving food and drinks at TGFS. We thank everyone who signed up for a food-service shift at TGFS.

Staff Assembly thanks every business and department that supported TGFS by signing up as a sponsor or vendor. Their generous contributions make the event more festive and their financial support helps fund the staff and staff dependent scholarships awarded by Staff Assembly each spring. Applications to participate in the 2016 TGFS vendor showcase will be released in the Staff Voice in early 2016. All campus departments will be invited to submit an application to table at TGFS and share their programs, resources, services, and successes with attendees.

2015 TGFS Caterer and Menu

This year's TGFS menu tasting committee awarded the May 7 TGFS catering job to the team from Lunch Box Express and Rich's Ice Cream Catering. They'll be serving up tasty Tex-Mex style entrees, chips and salsas, and sweet and savory salads. For dessert, take your pick from three flavors of hand-scooped ice cream, topped with a wedge of waffle cone made on the on-site griddle. The smell of freshly baked waffle cones might just drive you to eat dessert before your lunch!

And of course, we've got options for staff who require or prefer vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free fare. View the 2015 TGFS menu.

Ticket ordering closed Apr. 22
Ticket sales for this year's TGFS event closed at 5 p.m. on Apr. 22. We sold a total of 6,100 tickets and thank everyone who collected the entree choices and submitted the orders on behalf of their colleagues.

Menu Tasting Committee

Staff Assembly received nearly 100 applications from staff interested in choosing this year's TGFS menu by tasting everything on the menus proposed by three prospective caterers - University Catering, Hannibal's Catering & Events, and Lunch Box Express.

We were fortunate to have some thoughtful staff participate in our first-ever open-campus tasting committee. Each was very focused on ensuring they picked a menu that looked and tasted great, as well as would have broad appeal for their fellow staff. Each of the tasting committee members offered the following comments on what tipped the scales in favor of their favorite menu (pictured at right from l to r):

  • Sara Dowling, Nutrition Department - "I liked the freshness and colors of the ingredients used. I also loved the dessert!"

  • Russell Morrow, Student Housing - "I liked the creative mixture of flavors and textures in each of the different entrees and sides."

  • Alecia Davis, Distribution Services - “The caterer's presentation was 'on point' with the proposed Tex-Mex theme. Their entrees would satisfy a wide variety of tastes, as would the beverage they've proposed."

  • Thomas Robinson, VM: Central Services - I liked the caterer's creativity and attention to detail. They highlighted all of the flavors you would expect from a Tex-Mex themed menu and topped it off with a fun dessert. I hope everyone enjoys their TGFS lunch."

  • Andra Williams, International Programs Office - "I really enjoyed the caterer's ability to create a whole experience, instead of just providing food.  You can tell they thought about the customer in the décor, their professionalism and, of course, their delicious food!"

TGFS Tennis Tourney Logo

TGFS Sports

The TGFS Tennis Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 2 at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on the Davis campus. Play starts at 9 a.m. and the tournament format will be men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. The registration deadline is Apr. 30. Registration instructions, tournament details, and contact information is posted on the TGFS Tennis Tournament site.

Update on other TGFS sports
The TGFS planning committee will not be able to organize the golf tournament, volleyball tournament or fun run usually held before TGFS. A bowling tournament was never a possibility given the Memorial Union Games Area is temporarily closed for renovation.

For the past couple of years, Campus Recreation and Unions has coordinated logistics for these events, and before them other volunteers handled planning for the sporting events, which allowed the TGFS committee to focus on its primary charge - the picnic itself. Without outside support, the TGFS planning committee cannot take on these extra activities. 

Our hope is to offer these events again next year and if anyone is interested in volunteering to help with planning and coordination, please send an email to tgfs@ucdavis.edu.

2016 TGFS Logo Contest

Ten staff submitted original logos for consideration as the official 2016 TGFS logo.

All staff will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite logo at the logo contest booth at the TGFS celebration on May 7. The logo that receives the most votes wins. The designer will be recognized in an edition of the Staff Voice e-newsletter and will receive a complimentary t-shirt featuring their winning logo design! Best of all, the winning logo will be featured on all TGFS materials in 2016.

2016 TGFS Guess the Weight Contest

Every year, the TGFS committee plans a photo opp at a different campus location and asks staff to guess what everything (well, most everything) in the picture weighs. This year, the photo was taken at the shovel gateway sculpture that links the arboretum to downtown Davis. When you're out at TGFS on May 7, swing by the Guess the Weight booth and submit your best guess for the total weight of:

  • The 39 UC Davis staff featured in the picture and the 440+ used shovels collected to create the vine-inspired gateway.

The person who guesses the weight closest to the actual tally wins two, one-day passes to Disneyland or Sea World, with a two-night hotel stay in Anaheim or San Diego.

A big thanks to TAPS' staffer and photographer Bill Payne for herding us all together, and Staff Assembly volunteers, the Chancellor and Provost, and the Arboretum and Public Gardens staff for lending their weight, as well as ornamental plants (most of which can be purchased at the next Arboretum plant sale on April 11), and of course, for keeping the Arboretum in tip-top shape for everyone to enjoy.
