2015 Thank Goodness for Staff Celebration

Staff at TGFS

Thank Goodness for Staff is a springtime celebration organized by UC Davis Staff Assembly in honor of all UC Davis staff members. The 2015 TGFS picnic held on May 7 was our 35th year celebrating the hard work and contributions of UC Davis staff and we invite you to join in the fun.

This year's festivities included contests like the Guess the Weight photo contest and the TGFS 2016 Logo contest. In addition to a delicious lunch, staff will be treated to prize drawings, freebies and other services at the various on and off-campus booths in our vendor showcase. We also had popcorn machines, roving magicians, caricaturists, quirky photos opps in the photo booths, and more.

Best of all, it’s all free. Isn’t it great to be UC Davis staff!

In early June, staff will also be celebrated and honored at the Citations for Excellence and Staff & Staff Dependent Scholarship award ceremony held at the Alumni Center.

A couple things to note about the TGFS event:

  • Tickets are for meals only. Staff are welcome to attend the event without a meal ticket.
  • TGFS is for staff only and not intended for the families and friends of staff.
  • Animals are not allowed at TGFS, except in the case of service animals.

What to bring to TGFS:

  • A great attitude
  • Your meal ticket
  • Sunblock – because we always request great weather
  • A folding chair, blankets, or something comfortable to relax on
  • Beach umbrella  to share shade (ensure you have the equipment to properly stake/anchor your shade)
  • Reusable mug for refreshments
  • Reusable bag for vendor giveaways

Transportation and Parking

Please choose the lowest impact option available to you when traveling to TGFS. We anticipate a wonderful turnout for TGFS and encourage you to consider these helpful transportation tips:

  • If you can walk, please do so! This is the best option for limiting our carbon impact as well as our impact on available parking.
  • If you can't walk, then ride your bike! TAPS will be on site offering safe, complimentary valet bicycle parking.
  • If you can't walk or bike, hop on one of the free shuttles.
  • If you must drive, please carpool.

2015 TGFS Survey Summary Results

2015 TGFS Event Survey

Thank you to everyone who completed our 2015 TGFS event survey. We received 289 responses and you can view the summary results. We're addressing several concerns with this year's caterer, and the planning committee for the 2016 TGFS event will be reviewing all of the valuable input provided by staff when planning the menu, entertainment, and all other elements of next year's Thank Goodness for Staff picnic and celebration.

Volunteer Information

Staff Volunteers
Staff are encouraged to come out and relax, and enjoy the activities available. However, we greatly appreciate the support of all the staff who signed up to help volunteer at the event. All volunteers received a free hat to wear on the day of the event to identify them as a volunteer. Additionally, all volunteers will be invited to a thank-you party, which will take place after the dust has settled from TGFS.

Administrator Volunteers
In keeping with tradition, administrators will be serving food and drinks at TGFS. We thank everyone who signed up for a food-service shift at TGFS.

TGFS Sponsors and Vendors

Staff Assembly thanks every business and department that supported TGFS by signing up as a sponsor or vendor. Their generous contributions make the event more festive and their financial support helps fund the staff and staff dependent scholarships awarded by Staff Assembly each spring. The list of sponsors and vendors participating in this year's TGFS celebration is running down the left column of this page.

Applications to participate in the 2016 TGFS vendor showcase will be released in the Staff Voice newsletter in early 2016. All campus departments will be invited to submit an application to table at TGFS and share their programs, resources, services, and successes with attendees.

2016 TGFS logo

2016 TGFS Logo Contest

Congratulations to Andrea Henderson,  California State 4-H Office, who designed the winning logo for 2016 TGFS. Nearly 300 people cast a vote for their favorite logo design at TGFS, which will be used on all things TGFS in 2016. "My inspiration for this logo comes from Davis itself, a one-of-a-kind place full of sunshine and vegetation," writes Andrea. "I also took inspiration from UC Davis' leading role in agricultural research and of course, our friend, the honey bee."

Ten staff submitted original logos for consideration as the official 2016 TGFS logo. View this year's logo submissions.

2015 TGFS Guess the Weight Contest

guess the weight image

Will Gee with Athletics, thanks to a little help from his supervisor, submitted the weight closest to the actual poundage of all people and shovels in our Guess the Weight contest. The nearly 500 entries ranged from 114 pounds to 1,000,000 pounds, but Will's entry of 9,188 pounds was closest to the actual combined weight of 9,167 pounds.

The post-it note in Will's hand shows the meticulous calculations that made his guess so accurate. Here's the back story: Will's getting married next weekend and his supervisor, who was unable to attend TGFS, slapped that post-it note on Will's desk right before the picnic. His message to Will was, this is the winning weight and the prize of a Southern California vacation would make for a nice honeymoon.

Congratulations, Will, you picked a great supervisor.

A big thanks to TAPS' staffer and photographer Bill Payne for herding us all together for the Guess the Weight photo.

TGFS 2015 Photos

Check out the 2015 TGFS photo album featuring shots by the event photographer and TAPS staffer, Bill Payne. The album also includes some photos of our first-ever evening TGFS. In the 35 years that the picnic has been held, the campus has never offered an evening event for those who work the swing or graveyard shifts. With the help of CFO Dave Lawlor, and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management, Allen Tollefson, we brought food and drink, and contests and prizes to about 150 Facilities Management staff whose work starts right about the time most of us are heading home.

Thanks to Strategic Communications, we've also got photos shared by staff packaged up neatly in a Storify.
